Decking boards span from joist to joist. If you use 5/4 decking, joists must be no farther apart than 16 inches. Decking made of 2x4s or 2x6s can span up to 24 inches. If you will run decking at an angle, you might need to put the joists closer together. Again, it's important to know your local codes.
If you install decking with gaps that are too narrow, or don’t leave any gap spacing at all, you will block the air flow from under your deck . I would go 10' and 6' staggered. If you haven't already framed the deck, i recommend framing it 3" shy of 16'x18' because you will inevitably encounter board ends with splits and you probably want a bit of an overhang. Then you can snap a chalkline and zip around with a circular saw and give it a haircut.

Jun 30, 2017 · My spacers worked well at spacing the boards. They stayed put wherever I placed them. Having the spacers be shorter in between the deck boards is a good thing especially when they have pressure on them from bowed boards. Making the top the spacer extend above the 2×4 block longer will help.
Not to deck boards it can't. If you go to the lead vision website and read the specs it requires a minimum of 6" for airflow so the product doesnt become waterlogged. It must be installed on joists recommended at 12" oc.

As I am getting close to installing the deck boards I would like to know what you people think about deck board spacing during install. This question has to do with shrinkage and expansion, not appearance. When I built my last deck I spaced the boards (5/4" x 5-1/2" PT) with a 1/8" drill bit.
